ABC News | A bill legalizing marijuana for medical purposes has passed the Connecticut Senate. Though this sets a dangerous precedent, a large amount of torrenters probably responded, “Well that sucks, but it ain’t no thing,” as most torrenters probably realize that there are many popular torrent site alternatives, and various ways to get around an ISP block on The Pirate Bay if the alternatives aren’t up to par. The Pirate Bay recently responded to the High Court ruling and suggested a few ways around the blockage.

The Atlantic | A little over 12 hours after blind Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng was released from the U.S. embassy in Beijing, to which he had fled after escaping house arrest, Chen now says that American officials encouraged him to leave the safe haven of the embassy building, in part by making promises that they failed to keep.

Washington Post | The Labor Department on Tuesday ordered Wal-Mart to pay $4.8 million in back wages and damages to thousands of employees who were denied overtime charges, the latest in a string of embarrassments for the company over its business practices.

Reuters | Nearly 15 percent of people worldwide believe the world will end during their lifetime and 10 percent think the Mayan calendar could signify it will happen in 2012, according to a new poll.  The end of the Mayan calendar, which spans about 5,125 years, on December 21, 2012 has sparked interpretations and suggestions that it marks the end of the world.

Associated Press | One World Trade Center, the giant monolith being built to replace the twin towers destroyed in the Sept. 11 attacks, will lay claim to the title of New York City's tallest skyscraper on Monday. Workers will erect steel columns that will make its unfinished skeleton a little over 1,250 feet high, just enough to peak over the roof of the observation deck on the Empire State Building.

CNN | Wind turbines have long produced renewable energy but a French engineering firm has discovered another eco-purpose for the towering structures.  Eole Water claims to have successfully modified the traditional wind turbine design to create the WMS1000, an appliance that can manufacture drinking water from humid air.

Haaretz | A senior UN official in Geneva last week listed Israel among the countries that she says are restricting the activities of human rights groups.  The statement, issued on Wednesday by UN Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillay, lists Israel along with countries such as Belarus, Zimbabwe, Egypt, Ethiopia and Venezuela.

Politico | Just as the House Rules Committee convened to weigh amendments to the measure, spearheaded by Reps. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) and Dutch Ruppersberger (D-Md.), the administration released a formal policy statement that raised the stakes: It said President Barack Obama’s advisers would recommend that the president veto the bill unless there are significant changes to boost privacy protections, add new protections on users' personal information and alter its liability protection language.
