Peer-reviewed study reveals that FDA allowed oil-contaminated seafood to be sold to Americans

In the wake of the horror of the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, some independent chemists and toxicologists warned that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was using outdated testing procedures and was allowing seafood tainted with oil to make it to the consumer market.

This was bolstered considerably by a peer-reviewed study conducted by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) published in a journal entitled Environmental Health Perspectives.

The study revealed that the FDA’s risk assessment protocol was thoroughly lacking and allowed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), a known carcinogen and developmental toxicant, in unacceptable levels to reach the American consumer.

The FDA was directly responsible for allowing food containing “10,000 times too much contamination” to reach the tables of Americans.

The high levels of PAHs are especially dangerous for pregnant women and children, as they have been linked to increased risk of cancer, birth defects, neurological impacts and liver toxicity, according to the NRDC’s petition to the FDA.

The NRDC’s formal petition to the FDA calls for tolerance levels to be set for PAHs in seafood to ensure protection of public health (especially children and other vulnerable groups), to strengthen future government responses to oil spills, and to modernize the FDA’s risk assessment procedures.

The NRDC points to the fact that the FDA’s assessment procedures are not in line with the most recent recommendations published by the National Academy of Sciences.

The co-author of the study, Miriam Rotkin-Ellman says that their findings are just part of the laundry list of evidence that the FDA ignores when it comes to health risks from chemical contaminants in our food supply.

This is also just more proof that the federal government systematically puts corporate profits before the people, even if it means potentially fatal health problems.

I think launching an Occupy the FDA movement wouldn’t be a bad idea given their active support for the extremely dangerous GMO industry and their willful ignorance of the risks posed by seafood coming from the Gulf of Mexico after the BP spill.

“Our findings add to a long list of evidence that FDA is overlooking the risks from chemical contaminants in food,” Rotkin-Ellman said in a media bulletin. She continues, “We must not wait for people to get sick or cancer rates to rise, we need FDA to act now to protect the food supply.”

This is just like the GMO problem, it seems that only after all of America is riddled with cancer and the environment is totally overrun by GMO seeds will the FDA take a stand.

Even then if Monsanto still exists the FDA will probably be too busy covering up the health risks to actually do anything about it.

Hopefully this study will bring enough attention to the issue that the FDA will be forced to modernize their risk-assessment protocols and thus actually do their job instead of what they usually do: protect corporate interests to the detriment of us all.
